Last night a few of my friends popped over and we ended up watching some videos that my dad had recorded on VCR in the 1980's.
The colours were amazing then and the people on television looked really plain in comparison to the 2000's.
My favourite bits were the recordings of The Smiths on Top of the Pops. Morrissey prancing around miming and struttin' his stuff was pleasing on the eyes.
Thanks Top of the Pops, you rekindled my love for a band whom were once a fave, but I'd given a rest.

Upon browsing the internet today, I discovered Condé Nast are opening GQ & Vogue restaurants in a bid to spread their brand values beyond glossy paper.

Currently they own a GQ bar, Vogue café and a Tatler club, but this is seemingly not enough. In interviews the chairman of Condé Nast International, Jonathan Newhouse has said he believes restaurants are a 'Natural way to extend brand values.'

The company are also planning on opening these resturants in countries where they do not currently publish, a perhaps clear attempt to reach a new market.

The Traditional
Manipulation Technique
By Filippo Centenari & Beppe Bolchi

Filippo and Beppe applied the "classic" manipulation technique that we all know and love from original SX70 film material: applying rounded tools to move the emulsion under the foil as well as using heat and cold to create different tonal ranges.

The manipulation expert Filippo says: After taking your first picture, let it develop for some time, while protecting it from light. Afterwards you can use cool or warm tools to manipulate the color development, for example a lighter/fire/heater/hairdryer to create reddish or orange results at the applied spots or ice cubes which make the cooled parts lighter and less sepia.

You can also apply tools on the surface of the picture in a drawing-like way. Utilize different tools in order to change the outcome of your strokes and patterns (pencils, wooden sticks, etc) which don't harm the foils surface. Start manipulating the film gently and repeat it over the same area in order to achieve the classic SX manipulation result of twisted, artistic, watercolor-like effects.

Both artists explain that higher pressure or a knife will reach the white layer underneath by breaking through the chemical paste onto the back-layer of the integral picture, which can result in beautiful patterns.

When the emulsion is dry after a couple of hours you can also paint on it with a soft pen or watercolors, explains Beppe. Using this “manipulation” method on PX Silver Shade material, you don't have to do it right away, but you can take your time and do it back home, with all the time and tools you need. For impressive result take the image apart after the development process is complete and wait some minutes in order to let the emulsion take air.

Beppe says that the PX Silver Shade emulsion is very soft and easy to manipulate if the transparent foil is lifted from the background. This doesn't have to be done right away after development, but can be done an hour or more after (Beppe successfully tried it 24 hours after development!). In this case, the emulsion is still wet (be careful so you won’t stick to the transparent layer) and it’s possible to touch it softly and gently directly.

The Integral Emulsion Lift

The emulsion lift technique is possible and quite easy with the new PX Silver Shade materials. Philippe applied a similar process as he had done before on TZ Artistic film.

Material needed: PX Silver Shade film, scissors or cutter, a bowl of hot water, a watercolor brush (for painting) and a surface on which to transfer the emulsion. Philippe recommends watercolor paper for your first try.

Before beginning, take a picture and let it dry properly. This step takes much longer than with many other instant films. Philippe recommends letting the film dry for one full day before attempting the lift technique.

When the film is absolutely dry, you can open it by cutting the edges of the white frame with scissors or a cutter. Then tear all the layers apart, so that all you are left with is the mylar (transparent plastic) sheet, where the image should be printed on the inside. You will then need a bowl filled with hot water, about 40-45°C (about 105-113°F). Make sure your bowl is big enough to hold the new receiving sheet or surface.

Dip the mylar sheet in the water, backside on top. After a short time you should see the emulsion is starting to peel off the plastic support. Use a watercolor painting brush to help remove it from the mylar, starting in the corners and pushing towards the center.

Normally the emulsion will peel off completely and float in the water. You can then dispose of the mylar sheet in a recycling bin for plastics. Turn the emulsion upside down in the water, using the brush, and try to make it float on the top of the water as flat as possible, so that the image is visible in its normal direction.

At this point you can slide the new receiving sheet under the emulsion, and let the emulsion get in touch with it. Phillipe suggests using watercolor paper for a first try, as it is the easiest to deal with, but you can also use many other things as a surface. When the 2 elements are in perfect contact (which happens in time as the paper tends to float and the emulsion tends to sink), use your fingers to keep them together and take the whole thing out of the water.

You can now arrange the emulsion on the paper, and give it the shape you like. If the emulsion gets stuck in the wrong position, just add some water with the brush to help it move again. When you’re pleased with the results, dry on a flat, horizontal surface.

Can't wait to get my student loan so I can buy some film and start trying!

If you’re looking for a real greasy spoon though, this isn’t the place. On Greek Street, in London’s gay capital Soho lies probably one of the nicest day and early hangouts I’ve ever laid my eyes on.
If you just peeped at the outside, you’d defiantly wonder if you’d stepped out of W1 and into Paris. With all the Gingham tea cloths and lovely single flowers on the table, you are sure to be contented. The pots of tea are huge and the cakes, which are slightly pricy but covered in summer fruits, or chocolate, what ever you go for.
If it couldn’t get any better, when I wondered upstairs I stumbled on an exhibition by Sigur Ros’ lead singer Jónsi Birgisson and his partner Alex Somers' named ‘Riceboy Sleeps.’ The upstairs was covered in their art and had a lovely soundtrack blasting out of a tinny old radio.
Defiantly worth a visit.

So bad was the Tower's reputation that one urban myth told how the architect, wracked with guilt at creating this monstrosity, threw himself from the roof.'

With that lovely description, me and my flatmate thought it would be a brilliant idea to chuck ourselves in at the deep end and head out there. Walking through the lovely Maida Vale, past the British Broadcasting Centre's studios and many a house you'd be more than happy living in for the rest of your life, we were wondering if we were in the right place.
After finding the canal, it was in our vision. Huge and monstrous with its arm, the TV mast flying high above the 30Th floor we knew it was the one we'd read about. In the courtyard to get round into the building we found shit and socks, and all we could smell was piss. So we snuck in through the entrance, with the first thing to come to vision being a man, who can only be described as the modern spit of Happy Monday's Bez almost barging into us, with the backing track of the receptionists Reggae music.
The rubbish shoots were all blocked and the noise of the lift sounded like a cross between the stings in an orchestral soundtrack and what i would put my finger on as the noise a spaceship would make. The corridors had been painted bright yellow, to cheer up the place?
Despite all this, the building is grade two listed, as it was designed in the Brutalist style by architect Ernő Goldfinger (whom was also the architect of the Barbican.) Love it or hate it that is the question? After returning home and seeing the refurbs of the top floors, I'm still not sure if I could be swayed to desire to live there or not.

I'm a little peeved today.
I don't think I'm really that good at this 'real life' thing I've been doing since I moved out, I have recently gone over stropy, developed a sly soft spot for cheesy 90's tunes and Elton John, I almost put tomato sauce on everything I can (I'll never give this up) and I have even invested in potato waffles and fish fingers instead of the real things I usually buy.
Why? I don't know. I've decided I don't really like the 'school playground' and I want to play catch on my own?
Maybe the lack of inspiration I've been giving myself has made me revert back to the brain I had during early years, I don't know.

On another note;
Romance is Boring. It really is. My indecisivness has lead me to repel the opposite sex through not brushing my hair or wearing makeup.

It really has been a big year. I moved to Blackburn and has a wonderful time, then moved to London and now I'm all oldish and doing a degree and i'm meant to be publishing magazines for the rest of my life, i'm quite contented with that. I've bought too many cameras and made so many new good friends who make my life a little bit more delightful everyday.
Christmas has been and gone and I've seen many a nice old face, which has made me smile millions.
As for new years resolutions, I'm going to start writting and taking pictures more, budgeting (necissary!) and be nicer to people. This means i'll have to be less grumpy and include money for the homeless in my new budget.
I'm really excited for tonight because I'm going to a pop star themed party, a bottle of wine and being around my favorite gingers (well, two of them, ones in a Geordie) will be an excellent way to kick start oh tenny.

I would like to tell the whole bloggers world about Haloween 2009.
It was all about preperation involving paint our faces with watercolours in a Zombie fashion, nipping to the boozer across the road for snacks and loo roll, visiting the cashpoint and ringing and ringing and ringing the party line.
At about half eleven one of us lucky buggars got through, we all jumped into three taxis and made our way to a carpet warehouse in Worsley.
I wasn't sure what it was going to be like to be perfectly honest, but as soon as I stepped under the metal shutters, I knew I was in for a proper treat.
People were stood all over the shop, on platforms touching the ceiling, steps, and I even saw some lads on top of a cloth covering some metal, which I can only guess they had convinced themselves it was a trampoline.
Blasting out the best of dub you wouldn't think it could better then being around all your friends up in the air like kites. That was until a cheeky little Ska band came on. I still don't know their name, but 'Guns of Brixton' which they changed to 'Guns of Manchester' I can safely say at the time made us the happiest people alive, despite the fact it completely doesn't fit, they had the spirit of the North.
The police were crashing the metal shutters to the Clash's 'WHEN THEY KICK AT YOUR FRONT DOOR, HOW YOU GONNA COME?' and we were on top of the world.
Then the police really did kick, and it got shut down, but it was a peaceful and lovely way to go, well what we thought, until we actually realised we were in Worsely, somewhere none of us know at five/six in the morning in the pouring rain. After a few hours of hailing taxis, we ended up in Sally's lovely and warm halls with broomsticks and other attire we had gathered on our little life journey.

For Caspar and Harry's coming of age's we had a little shin dig in our flat.
With prep being me getting WAY to over excited and making many a cake, brownie and even a two layered jelly, it turned out to be rather nice. That is until I drank too much Proseco and put myself to bed, just before Panda Bear caught on and crashed it all.

Roger Hiorns made a derelict flat in Elephant & Castle (close to my new university) into a crystal haven. Roger is nominated for this years Turner prize. During preperation for moving away, I have spent time with my father. I really like my father. We have a new white room in our house. It holds three vinyl players, a superlambbanana, many books and many vinyls.

Last night over white wine and such me and my father got jazzy.
People my age don't really listen to jazz enough.

Well the 22nd of August to be precise. Me and mon amis made a little trip to Franky's bar in Darwen (who's Franky?) to see the lovely Little Comets, along with support from Blackburn's favorites Cassini Club and Down In Paris.

Cassini Club arrived to the crowd, generally fueled from £1.40 pink sambuca and lemonades at about nine o'clock and everyone had a little boogie to their collection of tunes made to make everyone fancy going to the disco. They ended on their cracking new 'un 'The Future of You & I' and despite very recently getting a new drummer kept it on top form!

Soon after came the Down in Paris lads. From the perspective of a band i've seen a fair few times, they just keep getting better and better, giving all they've got everytime, and with the help of lead singers cheeky comments, they sure got the crowd up and going ready for Little Comets themselves.

Shortly after followed Searching For Seraphim, another band of boys from my hometown Blackburn. Unfortunatly, this time I missed them as I was most probably getting carried away with the sambucas. However they have it together with gigs in various towns in Lancashire and I've also been informed the capital. With support slots in the past including Tom Hingley and Sergeant they are surely worth checking out.

With all their attire set about the stage..

including tamborines and some strange form of hanging maraca's attatched to the ceiling with ropes, the band set off getting everyone up and having a giggle. My personal favorite was 'Dancing Song' which certainly fulfilled the promise of its title. With the girls at the front doing little moves and the boys going sick behind us, the surrounding crowd sure got their moves out too which made everyone lovely and happy.

maybe its a new direction for Christians contacting people?

In Manchester today, I saw Fizz from Corination Street in Spar. Last week, before I went to see 'Looking For Eric' (brilliant film by the way..) I saw Liz McDonald from Corination Street.
I don't even watch television really, and its quite irrelivant, but still fairly amusing.
My boyfriend loves corrie, I'm sure he's jelous..

Its good to be Northern sometimes.
